ADOPTED

Kai, STAR #2117

Kai came to STAR from a breeder where he was an outside only dog. Life started looking up when he landed with our rescue and now even better as STAR Alum Irene came forward to adopt him. This will make their 5th STAR dog! – Ace #928, Lexi, #1079, Carlos #1603 and Buddy #1745.  Thank you, Sue for another great foster job and Patti as always for being our alumni relations leader helping us match dogs to great families.

💙 Meet Kai – The Handsome Hunk Ready to Steal Your Heart!🐾

Kai is a handsome 5-year-old red merle Australian Shepherd tipping the scales at around 85 pounds. Don’t let his size fool you – this big guy is nothing but a lovable goofball with a heart as big as he is! We would love to see him continue his weight loss journey with a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Note on Kai: He came to start from a breeder and was kept outside only so along with adjusting to a whole new life of being part of a family – he had significant issues with his coat and skin, so sadly, he had to get a very close cut. We never want to groom an Aussie this short unless the alternative grooming would be too painful – but it’s growing back fast!  See more pics for his gorgeous coloring and what his coat will look like again very soon!

So- more about this handsome boy:  Kai has never met a stranger. He greets everyone with a wagging nub and is especially wonderful with kids. Whether he’s soaking up attention from family or making new friends, Kai is happiest when he’s surrounded by his people.

Kai loves his adventures! He walks well on leash, enjoys his daily “walkies,” rides beautifully in the car, and is always ready to hop in for a road trip. When the weather is warm, you’ll often find him cooling off on the sun shelf of the pool. He’s also a toy enthusiast and is takes it on as his job to destroy and destuff them – a standard Aussie trait!

He does well in a crate but is also trusted free in the house when his foster is gone for a few hours. At night, he sleeps great throughout the night.  Kai knows his basic commands, has a pretty good recall, and is eager to please. Because he came from a breeding situation where he always had canine companions, he thrives in a home with another friendly dog to keep him company – so a furry companion is a must.

On leash, Kai can become excited when he sees other dogs, especially smaller ones. His reactions come from wanting to interact and play. His future family should be committed to continuing his leash work so he can keep building confidence and good manners.

If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate companion who loves people, enjoys adventures, and will happily soak up every pet you have to give, Kai may be the perfect addition to your family. This sweet, silly boy is ready to leave his past behind and start the next chapter of his life with a family to call his own

Please complete an application to be considered as an adopter, learn more about and meet this handsome hunk. His foster home is in Pearland.
IMPORTANT: We do not deliver dogs to adopters. You must be able and willing to come meet the dog in their foster home. A home visit by one of our STAR volunteers is a required part of our adoption program. Adoptions outside of Texas are rare because of these requirements. You must have a secure fence in place, and we are not fans of apartments for this breed, nor homes where the dogs will be home alone 8+ hours daily. All STAR dogs are adopted to be inside pets and family members only and all current or past pets in the home must have proof of being kept up to date on vaccinations and Heartworm prevention. The adoption fee is $300 and trust us, we spend that or much more on dogs to get them vetted – all STAR dogs will be neutered/spayed, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, heartworm negative, and on monthly heartworm prevention. If you already have an application on file with us, you can contact us to let us know you are interested.

Kai is a 5-yr old big, beautiful red merle and weighs in at 90lbs. He came to us needing a fresh start and lots of TLC. Along with adjusting to a whole new life, he’s also dealing with some significant skin issues and hair loss that we’re already working hard to treat. Despite everything he’s been through, Kai is a happy go lucky boy and is finally getting the care, comfort, and kindness he deserves. As he settles into rescue life, we’re excited to watch him heal and lose some much-needed weight. We know his best days are ahead, and we can’t wait to share his journey with you.
