Poppy, STAR #2120

Poppy hit the jackpot! She caught Frank’s eye and they are going to make a great pair. Poppy came to us from a breeding situation where she had minimal socialization, so she needs a patient person and Frank is ready to give her an easy transition and all love and kindness she needs – and he has a strong background with positive-rewards training which we love. We are excited to hear about their future together. Thank you, Pam for fostering her at Aussie Acres and to Brian for the home visit.

❤️ Meet Poppy, a stunning blue merle Australian Shepherd with one dazzling blue eye, one warm brown eye, and a heart that’s just waiting to bloom. At just under 2 years old and about 45 pounds, Poppy is proof that sometimes the sweetest victories come from patience, kindness, and celebrating the little milestones.

Poppy’s first year of life didn’t give her the opportunity to learn that people could be trusted. When she first arrived at STAR, she was so frightened that she would simply freeze and had to be carried from place to place. Fast forward to today, and while she’s still a work in progress, the transformation has been nothing short of remarkable.

Every week brings a new accomplishment. She now eagerly runs into the kitchen for breakfast (especially if there’s yogurt involved!), happily eats alongside the other dogs, gently takes treats from your hand, and has learned that people can bring wonderful things. She’ll come over for affection when you’re sitting with her, loves cuddling during quiet moments, and mornings are her absolute favorite. She and her foster sister, Luna Belle, turn the bed into a playground each morning before breakfast, complete with zoomies, wrestling matches, and plenty of happy silliness.

Poppy absolutely adores other dogs and truly thrives in their company. She has never met a dog she didn’t like, whether they’re permanent housemates or visiting guests. She has been introduced to dogs of all sizes and personalities and welcomes every new friend with a wag and an invitation to play. Because she gains so much confidence from watching other dogs, she will need a confident, social canine companion in her forever home to continue showing her that the world isn’t such a scary place after all.

While Poppy has made incredible progress, her future family should understand that she still has some hurdles to overcome. She remains nervous when someone walks directly toward her and prefers people to let her come to them. Once she knows you’re safe, she absolutely enjoys being loved on, but gentle hands under her chin are much more comfortable than reaching over her head. Leash training is still in the very early stages. Right now, the leash causes her to freeze, and sometimes she’d rather chew on it than walk with it! Her family should be prepared to continue patiently helping her build confidence, always at her own pace and never by forcing the issue.

The good news? Poppy has an abundance of qualities! She is completely house trained, learned the dog door almost immediately, has free run of the house, and has never shown a hint of aggression toward people or other animals. She’s content staying home with her canine companions and has never tried to escape. She enjoys chew toys, the occasional bully stick, and has just enough mischievous puppy spirit to keep life entertaining.

Speaking of entertaining… Poppy has one adorable little quirk that her family should know about: she is a blanket thief! Throw blankets, bed covers, lap blankets – if it’s soft, there’s a good chance Poppy will quietly relocate it to her favorite sleeping spot. Thankfully, she doesn’t destroy them; she simply seems to believe every blanket belongs in her personal collection. It’s impossible not to smile when you discover where today’s “treasure” has ended up.

Poppy isn’t looking for perfection. She’s looking for someone willing to see beyond the timid exterior and recognize the incredible dog she’s becoming. She needs a patient family that will let trust develop naturally, celebrate each new milestone, and understand that the greatest relationships are sometimes the ones you earn one gentle step at a time.

If you’re the kind of person who believes every small victory is worth celebrating and understands that love isn’t rushed, Poppy will reward you with something truly special. Beneath those cautious eyes is an incredibly gentle, affectionate soul who simply wants to belong. Given the time, patience, and love she deserves, there’s little doubt that Poppy will become the loyal, devoted best friend she’s always wanted to be.

❤️ Poppy is fully vaccinated, spayed, microchipped and tested negative for HW (and on monthly preventative). She is currently being fostered in Sweeney TX and is ready to find the loving forever home she deserves. If you’d like to learn more about Poppy, step #1 is to fill out an application.

IMPORTANT: We do not deliver dogs to adopters – you must be able and willing to come meet the dog in their foster home. A home visit by one of our STAR volunteers is a required part of our adoption program and thus, adoptions outside of Texas are rare because of these two requirements. You must have a secure fence in place, and we are not fans of apartments for this breed, nor homes where the dogs will be home alone 8+ hours daily. All STAR dogs are adopted to be inside pets and family members only and all current or past pets in the home must have proof of being kept up to date on vaccinations and Heartworm prevention. The adoption fee is $400 and trust us, we spend that or much more on dogs to get them vetted – all STAR dogs will be neutered/spayed, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, heartworm negative, and on monthly heartworm prevention. If you already have an application on file with us, you can contact us to let us know you are interested.
