Roper, STAR #1845

Roper is heading home with the Vandeveer Family. This Aussie savvy family are ready to welcome him to their household and so is new fur buddy brother, Sydney (left). Fun in the Texas Hill Country and watching deer wander past the back fence is in Roper’s future along with lots of patience and TLC. Thank you, Brian for fostering Roper and helping us find the perfect home for him. Thank you, John for the transporting him to STAR.

Roper is a 2-year-old Red Merle Male around 48lbs.  Roper came to STAR from a family who didn’t have enough time for him and thus, he spent the majority of his young life in a crate or small room. When he was 1st picked up by his foster, he wanted nothing more than the safety and comfort of his crate. He would scurry to it with any hint of stress.

After a few days, he slowly started to come out of his shell and started venturing out more and more. What makes Roper great is that when he is comfortable, he can be very relaxed, cuddly, and gentle.

He prefers to follow his foster dad around wherever he goes and lay under his desk while he is working. His favorite place to lay is in front of the air purifier while his foster dad is watching TV on the couch. He loves other dogs and approaches all new dogs with caution but quickly is ready to play once he knows the other dog is nice. He is very excited to go out in the mornings when it’s cool because he knows he will get to play chase with his 3 brothers/sister Aussies and would probably do best in a home with at least 1 other dog similar to his age.  He has not been tested around cats.

Roper is cautiously curious and likes to sniff around the property he lives on and then sprint back to his person. Roper needs to be in a very patient, and easy-going home, because he still has moments where he needs the comfort of his safe place and will retreat there if he feels uneasy.

He has done fine with kids who are calm and know how to behave around a dog.  If he’s around kids when they get loud or wild – or do not respect his space, he will retreat. Because of that, he would do best in a home without children or older children/teens that know how to respect him and give him his space.  He’d do best in a home where there is a good routine, and he doesn’t spend too much time alone.

He likes to chew bones but isn’t very toy motivated. He rarely barks but will howl occasionally when he is crated and wants to come out.

Overall, Roper is an easy dog that has a lot of really good qualities and really just needs a home that will be patient with him when it comes to comforting him though his insecurities and allowing him to acclimate to new things at his own pace.

To be considered as a home for Roper, you must fill out an application (on our website, under “adopt”).
