Blake Sheldon, STAR #2027

From stray to shelter to STAR to being the center of attention! Lucky Blake Sheldon (center, of course!) will get to stay forever in his foster home with fur-buddies, Trouble and Lucy. Thank you, Geneta for loving on this boy, helping him through his medical woes, and giving him a wonderful place to call home.

Sheldon came to us from shelter in Louisiana and was in rough shape. He had very little hair due to a skin infection, was positive for heartworms and super timid to the point he would pancake down from sudden moves and loud voices. Fast forward a couple months – he’s a settled and easy-going guy. it’s hard to know his age for sure, but around 2 years old and a petite 36lbs.

From his foster mom:

After arriving at my home with some time to settle, Sheldon was introduced to the resident Aussies and immediately began to come out of his shell! The first week was very scary for him but each week since he has gotten so much better and way more confident. He has a little happy dance he does now for treats, walks and pets. He loves the attention.

Before his heartworm treatment, he was playing hard with the resident Aussies – and he LOVES playtime. He’s slow to meet and trust new dogs – he will basically watch the new dog for a while to assess and decide his comfort level. Once he’s given time to warm-up, it’s all playtime.

When I got Sheldon, I was afraid he might be a runner, but he has never once tried to get out of yard or run from me. As a matter of fact, if you call him to you, he will come so fast he will almost knock you down because he can’t stop in time. He’s very Velcro and wants to be where his human is. He’ll go from room to room with you – watching every move you make.

Sheldon eats in his crate and when he sees me making breakfast, he will be sitting in the crate waiting for breakfast to be served. Sheldon has no clue what toys are for, and I have only seen him pick up toys on rare occasions. I think after he is more confident in his surroundings he might would like toys.

Sheldon is not much for getting on the furniture.  He much prefers to sleep under the footrest on my recliner or on the raised dog bed which he loves.  He sleeps at night in my room in a crate. I have my two Aussies sleeping on the bed, so Sheldon spends the night in a crate by my bed. When we head for bed at night he runs to the bedroom and will be in the crate when I get there (he likes his going to bed cookie that he gets in the crate).

I have seen no resource guarding except he will growl when the last foster dog gets close to me, but I’ve only ever heard him growl before that.

Sheldon is pretty good on the leash with minimal pulling. A very slight bump on the leash with a “don’t pull” is all the correction it takes. His walks here are usually off leash now, on my nine acres. He stays pretty close except when he and the other dogs are wrestling or playing.

Sheldon has exposed to cats, but I think he would do fine – he does not have a high prey drive. He does bark at the cows.

Sheldon is over all a very happy little dog, but he remains scared of loud noises. He is leery of new people but warms up very quickly. When you pet Sheldon, he tries to see how close he can get to you – and clearly, he would love to have his own human. I think over time Sheldon will become a very close companion for someone and be a really cuddly buddy.

I think Sheldon can be happy as an only dog or with another dog as he really lives playing with the other dogs.”

Sheldon has been fully vetted, treated for heartworms, his fur is coming back in nicely, is microchipped and he’s neutered. He’s medically perfect and ready to find his home! To learn more about Sheldon, please start with completing and adoption application here:

Introduction to the Adoption Process – South Texas Aussie Rescue

Sheldon came to STAR from the Acadia Parish in LA – picked up as a stray. He’s a Black Tri Male, around 2-3 years old and in rough shape. We will get him assessed and get him all the TLC he needs. His foster home is in Houston. If this is your dog, be prepared to show proof of ownership and to pay for our expenses incurred to date. Sadly, in addition to all of his medical woes, he is positive for heartworms – so we will treat him and this extends his stay with us and an available date estimated to be November.
