Sammy, STAR #2072

Celebrating for Sammy (l) who has been adopted by the Tucker family and new fur buddy, Scout (r). This lovely family was ready to open their home to a new dog after grieving the lost their beloved 15-year-old Aussie, Bleu. Thank you for choosing to adopt from STAR – we know you understand well the plight of animals at the shelter as this couple volunteer and foster cats for the local shelter. Thank you Choe for another wonderful foster job and letting Sammy go – we know he quickly worked his way into your family’s heart.
Meet Sammy!
Sammy is a sweet, people-loving pup who wants nothing more than to be near his humans. He’s a red-tri male, around 2 years old and 53lbs. He has cute pick freckled nose and a glorious full tail.
Sammy is the kind of dog who happily follows you from room to room, just to keep you company. Very Velcro and loves to be your shadow so he doesn’t miss out on what you are up to!
He’s great with other dogs and would love a playful friend to help burn off some of his energy, or a home that’s ready to keep him active with enrichment games, back yard play, and walks. In his foster home, he’s shown a generally low prey drive, and is submissive with other dogs – in other words, he does very well at respecting other dogs and their boundaries.
Sammy does well on walks, and is a little excited at first, but once he gets going, he loves to walk with you. He does not pull much, but if he sees a squirrel, he snaps to alert and would like to go to say hello.
He has not engaged much yet with toys but does like ones he can chew on. He’s a bit unsure of toys with squeakers! He has not shown any interest in playing ball or fetch – he’d rather hang out by your side. He sleeps peacefully in his kennel all night without a fuss, and is not destructive in the house, a total win.
Sammy is a high-energy boy who would benefit from continued training and an active home that can help him channel his enthusiasm in positive ways. Areas of work in progress – jumping on visitors due to excitement, being a bit mouthy on hands, and recall. With a little structure and consistency, he has so much potential to be an amazing companion. He’s so smart and will learn fast.
If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate dog who loves humans, enjoys doggy friends, and is ready to keep life fun, Sammy might be your perfect match.
If you are interested in learning more about this good boy and potentially adopt, the first step is to fill out an adoption application at the link below. His foster home is in Richmond.
Please Take Time to Read: 1) We do not deliver dogs to adopters. You must be able and willing to come meet the dog in their foster home. 2) A home visit by one of our STAR volunteers is a required part of our adoption program. Adoptions outside of Texas are rare because of these requirements. 3) You must have a secure fence in place, and we are not fans of apartments for this breed, nor homes where the dogs will be home alone 8+ hours daily. 4) All STAR dogs are adopted to be inside pets and family members only. 5) Your current and/or past pets in the home must have proof of being kept up to date on vaccinations and Heartworm prevention. 6) We do not adopt to families with children under the age of 6. 7) The adoption fee is $300 and trust us, we spend that or much more on dogs to get them vetted – all STAR dogs will be neutered/spayed, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, heartworm negative, and on monthly heartworm prevention. If you already have an application on file with us, you can contact us to let us know you are interested.

Sammy is a Red Tri Male, around 2 years old and 60lbs. His owner recently had a baby and found the family did not have enough time for this good boy. She found him as a stray and had not had him long, but describes him as a happy, easy-going boy. We will get him neutered, fully vetted and evaluated. His foster home is in S. Houston. He may be available mid-February.
