Carlos Tres, STAR # 1603

ADOPTED

Carlos Tres, STAR # 1603

Carlos has been adopted by the Bentz family.. This is their third STAR dog after Ace 2012 and Lexi 2014..One thing we know is that he will be well loved.. Thanks to Ellen for picking up Carlos and to Tiffani and Ruben for fostering and semi-taming him 🙂 STAR does have amazing volunteers..
Carlos was found running loose in New Caney several months ago.. He has been in his foster home for the last month being evaluated and smoothing out the rough edges.. This is what his foster mom says about Carlos..
Here’s a 4 week update on cutie Mr. Carlos.
“Am I doing it right?”
Carlos is a curious puppy who is ready to learn! He is easily redirected & somewhat sensitive.
Indoors he loves to play and can entertain himself with a toy, but has shown he prefers to stay with the pack and play with the pack. When humans are on the sofa, he likes to sit near and will use his long puppy legs, cute eyes and spongey puppy body to coerce affection and mild sofa play. He likes to play tug with other house pups, and will sometimes use creativity in locating other items to use as toys (toilet paper, deck of cards, empty water bottles!)
Outdoors (backyard) he loves to run and play with other pups. He likes toy ‘keep away’ the most.

Carlos is crate-trained. After a long day of supervising the human’s work, and backyard playtime, Carlos goes into his crate easily with his nighttime ice cube. He sleeps in his crate quietly all night. We actually don’t think he “needs” to be in his crate all night, but we have done that consistently so he gets a full nights rest, and the humans and house pups do too. (For humans that work from home, Carlos also does well with scheduled rest periods. He is a busy-body.)

Regarding his house manners, he is now consistent with sit, wait, look at me, back, lay down, and shake. He recognizes hand signals with each. He also willingly relinquishes a toy in his mouth when asked but doesn’t know the word drop on command just yet. He’s close! Carlos does very well during meal times and stays in his lane. He is allowed to lick another dogs bowl only when it is empty and the other dog walked away.
To manage his initial willfulness when calling him back inside (from backyard ), he has learned to respond to a whistle (sometimes in conjunction with hand signal ) and is nearly 100%. He does well with positive reinforcement (happy praise and/or treat or both!)
Regarding outdoor leash training, I recently began using a Gentle Leader. He is a strong 2 y/o male (70lbs) & may get a bit bigger. With a regular collar, his strong interest in sniffs and outdoor stimulation has the potential to damage his neck. I think consistent use of a Gentle Leader will be helpful.
As with most spirited Aussies, from a breeder or from the rescue, Carlos will need help learning how to manage puppy spooks (like even his shadow or shadowy things), stranger danger, and leash reactivity. He will make the perfect dog for a loving, positive and patient home.”
So basically Carlos is just learning.. he missed a lot.. He can be sensitive and spooky.. He is smart, has good housemanners and is learning obedience commands. He is terrible on leash but improving. He will do best with a sturdy playmate. Carlos will need an owner dedicated to working with him and teaching him what he needs to know.. he is a project.. but worth the effort..
If you are interested in meeting Carlos, please go to the website, read about adoption and submit an application.. His foster home is in N. W. Houston.

Carlos was found in New Caney around the middle of September.. No chip or tags.. If this is your dog, please be prepared to present photos, vet invoices and to pay for all expenses incurred by STAR.. He is a 60 lb. blue merle approx. 2 years old.. He will go to the vet and be evaluated in his foster  home in N. W. Houston.  He should be available for adoption after the first week in November..
