Thunder, STAR #1872

Thunder is heading home with Julie and Scott and will get all of their attention as their only dog – for now. Their Aussie, Stormy recently passed at age 14 and Thunder has some big shoes to fill, and we know he’s up for the challenge!  Walks, runs, hikes and maybe even paddle boarding is in his future with this active couple who wanted a buddy to go with them on their adventures.  Thank you, Brandi for fostering and helping this good boy find his best home.

Thunder is the third puppy taken in by STAR – and his brothers have been adopted. He is approximately 8 months old and 40lbs.

About Thunder, from his foster home:

Thunder is a sweet and loving boy! He is initially a little timid but warms up over time. He is becoming less shy as he gets out and experiences the world. He is currently in a foster home with 2 adults and 2 older teens and loves everyone.

Thunder gets along exceedingly well with the other dog in the house. He is good with being fed in the same room as the other dog but does require supervision as he will eat his food and the other dog’s food as well. There are cats in the house and he shows some interest (has jumped the gate to get into the cat area, but no issues with interactions)

He enjoys a variety of treats and a filled Kong. He will also play with a variety of toys.

He has made great progress with crate training and will now go in with a simple ‘in’ or with the promise of a treat.

Thunder has been working on basic manners like sit, wait, look at me, and off – so smart and he picks up quickly. He is a bit bouncy and the ‘off’ command is used when he jumps on someone. He loves praises for good manners. He has shown an interest in counter surfing but will respond quickly to the ‘off’ command.

Thunder initially was hesitant to walk on a leash but has since taken well to be taken on walks around the neighborhood. He stays close to mom and walks with a loose lead.

He is very well behaved in the car once settled and will sit in the back seat and look out the window.

On the “work in progress”…
He does bark when someone that he isn’t familiar with or hasn’t seen in a while enters the house. He will also bark when someone re-enters a room but will typically quiet when reassured that everything is OK. He doesn’t bark when he is outside in the yard even when the neighborhood dogs are barking. This is getting better as he gets more comfortable around the house.

Thunder is housebroken and will go outside to potty when told to do so. He does not always let the foster parents know that he needs to potty and will pee on a spot near the door. He is being redirected to potty outside and offered praise/encouragement.

Overall, Thunder is a wonderful dog and will be a great addition to a home. He is very sweet and just wants to show his love and be loved. His foster home is in San Antonio.

The third and last of our black tri male puppies has arrived !!!  His name is Thunder, 7 mos. old and 35 lbs.  Like his brothers, Skunk and Blackjack, he has a lot to learn.. Luckily he is in a great foster home in San Antonio and will be evaluated and vetted.. He should be available for adoption after Christmas.

Update from Foster home:

Thunder is making himself at home!  He is a sweet pup who seems mature beyond his 7 months. He gets along well with the humans and other dog. He doesn’t resource guard food or toys. He takes treats gently. He is a counter surfer so things are best not left out. He doesn’t like the lead and will refuse to budge if the lead is on. He is a great watch dog and will bark to let you know something is amiss – but quiets quickly though once a human checks on the disturbance. He has barked at the cats but hasn’t tried to jump the gate to chase them. Overall, he is a sweet, loving pup who will snuggle up with foster mom or dad.
