Rosie, STAR #2151

Rosie is off to live a ranch-life with Deanna. She’s always had several dogs and when she lost her sweet girl Delta, she took time to morn and then watched our website for a dog to join the family. She knew Rosie would be a great fit and we agree! Rosie is from a hording situation and needs lots of patience and TLC, so we are so happy she’s heading to a dog-savvy home. Thank you, Lori for fostering and to Brittnee for the home visit.

Rosie is a beautiful 3-year-old, 47-pound standard Australian Shepherd who came to STAR from a heartbreaking breeding situation in Louisiana. After about six weeks in a loving foster home, she has made wonderful progress and is ready to find the patient, special family who will continue helping her discover just how good life can be.

Much of the everyday world still seems new to Rosie. Unfamiliar people and places, sudden movements, household noises and car rides can make her nervous. When something startles her, she may retreat to a quiet spot, but she generally recovers quickly. Rosie needs people who will give her time and space to build confidence rather than pushing her into situations before she is ready.

Once Rosie feels safe, an entirely different girl begins to emerge. She is sweet, playful and wonderfully affectionate. She loves running and wrestling with her canine foster siblings but isn’t a nonstop-energy Aussie. After some fun, she’s perfectly happy to settle onto a dog bed or find a quiet place to relax. Rosie gets a great deal of confidence from the other dogs, so a friendly, confident canine companion would be a wonderful addition to her new home.

With people she trusts, Rosie can be quite the cuddle bug. She’s still figuring out furniture, but once she gets on the couch, she’ll happily lay right on top of her person and throw her head back for pets—and repeat the maneuver if you dare to stop! She also adores her very dilapidated stuffed Lamb Chop. It may no longer have a head, stuffing or squeaker, but Rosie proudly carries her “baby” everywhere.

Rosie is crate-trained, sleeps peacefully through the night in her crate and is doing very well with house training, although her new family should continue reinforcing her routine. She is learning basic commands and leash skills and is curious and responsive to training.

Rosie remains cautious with unfamiliar people and may be more comfortable approaching someone who is sitting rather than standing or moving toward her. New environments such as stores and the vet can also be intimidating. Her ideal adopters will understand fearful or undersocialized dogs—or be willing to learn, and will appreciate that her progress may come in small steps. Rosie has not been tested with children, and because she is sensitive to noise and sudden movements, a calm, predictable home will be the best fit.

Rosie isn’t looking for someone to rush her into becoming the dog they want her to be. She needs someone willing to meet her where she is. For the right family, the reward will be watching this once-frightened Louisiana girl continue discovering toys, couches, playtime, belly rubs and, most importantly, what it feels like to finally be home.

Rosie is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm and flea prevention. Her foster home is in Houston. If you think you might be the patient, loving home Rosie has been waiting for, please complete an adoption application as the next step.

IMPORTANT: We do not deliver dogs to adopters. You must be able and willing to come meet the dog in their foster home. A home visit by one of our STAR volunteers is a required part of our adoption program. Adoptions outside of Texas are rare because of these requirements. You must have a secure fence in place, and we are not fans of apartments for this breed, nor homes where the dogs will be home alone 8+ hours daily. All STAR dogs are adopted to be inside pets and family members only and all current or past pets in the home must have proof of being kept up to date on vaccinations and Heartworm prevention. The adoption fee is $400 and trust us, we spend that or much more on dogs to get them vetted – all STAR dogs will be neutered/spayed, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, heartworm negative, and on monthly heartworm prevention. Rosie is a beautiful 3 year-old red merle and weighs 40 pounds.  She is settling into her foster home and taking the time she needs to adjust to all the changes in her life.  We’re getting to know her – watching her confidence grow and giving her the patience and support she needs to feel safe.

Rosie is being fostered in the Houston area.  She is fully vetted and spayed.  Rosie will not be available for adoption until we feel she is ready.  There is no rush, we want to make sure she is comfortable and thriving before we begin looking for her forever family.
