Dexter, STAR #2119
💙 Dexter is Ready and Waiting for the Perfect home!
Dexter is a stunning blue merle Australian Shepherd who is almost 2 years old and weighs about 55 pounds. Behind that handsome Aussie exterior is an incredibly sweet, gentle soul who has been learning that people and life as a beloved family dog can be pretty wonderful.
Dexter came to STAR from a breeder situation where he had very little human interaction and spent most of his life outdoors with numerous other dogs. When he first arrived in foster care, he was terrified of people, no clue what a leash was, and did everything he could to avoid being touched. His world had been very small, and trusting strange humans was completely new to him.
What a difference patience, love, and time have made!
Today, Dexter follows his foster family around the house with a wagging tail and is becoming more and more a part of the family every day. He will come over on his own for attention, join his people on the couch, and happily request head rubs and belly rubs. He is truly a sweet boy who enjoys being near his people once he feels safe with them.
Dexter still has some ingrained fear when someone approaches or reaches for him, and he may initially back away. But instead of always keeping his distance, he is now choosing to come to his foster family more and more. Those may sound like small victories, but for a dog with Dexter’s background, they are huge, and wonderful to watch.
His leash skills have also come a long way. Putting on a leash has become much easier, and he does well once he is out and about. He has even taken a field trip to the pet store, where he walked around beautifully and handled the experience like a champ! Getting into the car is still a work in progress. He has jumped in on his own, but sometimes his uncertainty gets the better of him, and he needs a little help. Once inside, he is a very good passenger.
Dexter has adjusted beautifully to indoor living and is completely house-trained. He enjoys having access to a doggy door and spending time in his securely fenced yard. At night, he sleeps quietly in his own gated area in his foster family’s bedroom, which has become a comfortable safe space for him.
Other dogs are a big part of Dexter’s world. He especially enjoys his foster Aussie buddy and takes confidence from having another dog around. A confident, similar-sized canine companion in his forever home would be a wonderful benefit for Dexter as he continues learning how to navigate his new life.
And as Dexter’s confidence has grown, so has his personality! He loves toys and has appointed himself the household’s official Toy Collector. If another dog has a toy, Dexter politely waits until it is abandoned before adding it to his personal stash. He also enjoys chasing tennis balls, although returning them apparently wasn’t included in the original job description. 🎾 He has also discovered that kitchen counters can occasionally contain interesting treasures, so his new family will want to keep tempting goodies safely out of reach.
Dexter has done well meeting visitors, including children. He may initially bark at someone new but settles with reassurance. He does have some strong Aussie herding instincts which can mean he’ll nip at the heels of running thing (like small children), so a home with adults or older children would be the best fit for him.
Dexter’s ideal family will understand that his journey isn’t quite finished. He needs patient, compassionate people who won’t rush him and who will allow him to build trust on his own timetable. Because of his background, a securely fenced yard is required, and Dexter should be considered a flight risk, particularly while adjusting to a new home. Outside a fenced area, a secure leash and properly fitted collar or harness will be essential.
His new family should also understand that a move may initially be scary for him. Dexter has worked hard to build trust with his foster family, and he may take a few steps backward when everything becomes new again. Give him patience, consistency, kindness, and time, and we know he will relax in time as he has since arriving at his STAR foster home.
This beautiful boy has already traveled an incredible distance — not in miles, but in trust. The frightened dog who once wanted nothing to do with people now seeks out affection, relaxes on the couch, plays with toys, explores new places, and follows his people with a wagging tail.
Dexter doesn’t need someone to change him. He needs someone willing to continue the journey with him. In return, they’ll get the privilege of watching a very special Aussie discover just how good life can be. 💙🐾
Dexter is house trained, neutered, microchipped, fully vaccinated, and current on heartworm prevention. He is not a fan of a crate, and so his foster home gives him a gated corner. He’s currently fostered in a home North of Houston and is ready to find his forever home. If you’d like to learn more about Dexter or are interested in adopting him, the first step is to complete an adoption application at the link below.
Dexter is a gorgeous 1.5-year-old blue merle male weighing 55lbs. He came to us frightened and unsure after being rescued from a breeding situation alongside five other dogs. Thankfully, his life is now headed in a much brighter direction. We’re committed to making sure his future is full of love, security, and the stability he deserves. Dexter will be evaluated and fostered in the Houston area. Stay tuned for more updates on this handsome boy!
