Boots, STAR #2103

Boots is a smart, happy, trusting 5-year-old blue merle with tan trimmings, weighing 47 lbs. He loves his family and enjoys contact with them. He likes belly rubs, has been known to place his front legs in your lap for some hugs, and, while we discourage this, he’ll stand up for hugs too.  Given the chance, he’d be on the bed or furniture to be next to you. He gets along with men and women.  He has not been around children; however, we expect he’d be OK with older children.

While not leash trained, he walks well with a harness. Boots has not been tested with cats, however, he gets very focused when he sees one outside. Since he is smart and food-driven, training with treats would facilitate learning any new skills.

The only toy he’s played with, inside and out, is a tennis ball. He’ll bring it back to your general vicinity but retains it. You can gently take it out of his mouth.

Boots would make an outstanding only dog and could be part of a pack with a complimentary dog(s) but would need to be monitored. We don’t know if he’s lived with other dog(s) in a pack environment before, and he doesn’t seem to know how to play.

Generally, he gets along fine with our two, however, if they get excited about something or he tries to play, he can sometimes over-react and nip at them. It’s not vicious, but depending on how ours react, it can get noisy. Boots was just neutered, so that may moderate this behavior.

When Boots was neutered, he also had a bad tooth pulled. He needs to be on a soft diet until June 4th, which could be canned food, or less expensive would be using dry dog food, soaking it in water and making a mash with a fork (which is what we do). He also shouldn’t chew on anything, like Nylabones, tennis balls, etc., until after June 4th.

Boots doesn’t show signs of being a flight risk, however we still recommend, as best practice, the use of an Apple Air Tag (or similar) on his collar, minimally for the first couple of months, while he bonds with his new family.

Boots is crate trained, house trained, neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations and monthly heartworm prevention.  If you are interested in learning more about him and potentially adopt, the first step is to fill out an adoption application at the link below. His foster home is in Georgetown.

IMPORTANT: We do not deliver dogs to adopters – you must be able and willing to come meet the dog in their foster home. A home visit by one of our STAR volunteers is a required part of our adoption program and thus, adoptions outside of Texas are rare because of these two requirements. You must have a secure fence in place, and we are not fans of apartments for this breed, nor homes where the dogs will be home alone 8+ hours daily. All STAR dogs are adopted to be inside pets and family members only and all current or past pets in the home must have proof of being kept up to date on vaccinations and Heartworm prevention. The adoption fee is $300 and trust us, we spend that or much more on dogs to get them vetted – all STAR dogs will be neutered/spayed, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, heartworm negative, and on monthly heartworm prevention. If you already have an application on file with us, you can contact us to let us know you are interested.

Boots is a handsome 5 year old blue merle male and weighs 48lbs.  He was a fan favorite at the Bell County Shelter where he was taken on 9 different occasions.  His owners didn’t feel the need to keep him in a fenced in yard.  They didn’t come back for him this last time either.  Welcome to STAR, Boots!!  Your life has just gotten a whole lot better.  Boots will be fostered in Georgetown where he will be vetted and neutered.  He should be ready for adoption Mid May.
