Watson, STAR #1903

Watson hit the Doggy Lottery and joins the Pharr family. This dog savvy couple have had many dog breeds over the years and fell in love with Aussies when they adopted mini-Mollie (top R) and then Reef (left). Watson (bottom R) has will have a non-stop play and wrestle buddy in Reef and they were fast friends at the meet/greet. From stray to STAR to a happy home is what we call a win/win! Thank you, Deb and Julie for fostering.

Watson is a beautiful Aussie AND a beautiful soul. He is a Black Tri Male, 1-2 years old and around 70lbs.  He is a gentleman and so handsome – such an easy-going, guy and laid-back for his age.

He was released to STAR by a family who found him – he had no collar/chip, nor could an owner be found. He’s ready to find his forever home – and here’s what is foster mom says about this charmer:

“Watson is super sweet and loving.  He is happy all the time and never meets a stranger. He can settle in the home and when he wants your attention – he’ll put his heavy head on your lap and charm you with those brown eyes.

He absolutely loves toys, especially anything on a rope or a squeaker.  He’s excellent at knowing what the toys he can chew on and has not been destructive to non-dog toy things.

He is good with other dogs.  He could be an only dog, pending he gets lots of exercise/mental stimulation, or he’d love a sturdy, energetic playmate.  He’s always up for a good game of tug.  He can also settle when told.

Not tested with kids – but indication is that he’d be a best friend ready to share in snacks and follow them everywhere – caution would be due to his size, he’d be too much for younger children. He’d chase a running cat -and while also not tested with cats – indications are he’d be curious at first and then bored with them.

He is house trained and will let you know if he needs to go out.  He knows basic manners of sit and down. He shows interest to the food on the counter – so you may lose a sandwich or two if he’s able to smell it!  (Standard Aussie trait!). He loves, loves, loves treats and takes them nicely.  His name before he came to STAR might be “treat” as that word snaps him to attention!

Not much of a barker but will sound off if he hears another dog barking or will join in with his fur buddies if they bark at something.  He will alert you to the dangers of someone walking by the house, or if he sees a squirrel through the window.

He’s good on a leash, once he gets that initial energy out.  He needs more leash training skills, as when he really wants to sniff something, you are going with him over to that spot! He shows very little attention to other dogs, people, or cars on his walks – but the birds, bunnies, and squirrels pique his interest, and he bows at them to play. He could walk for miles – could be trained to be a running buddy.

Recent storms did not bother him all – slept like a log right thru it all.  Sleeps well at night – will lay at the side of the bed.  However, if you get up, he’s going to follow you…  total definition of a Velcro Aussie.  He’s always curious and wants to be with his person.

Good news if you hate the vacuum – so does Watson! He will do his best to bark at it and bite at it… so if you really must vacuum… he may need to go on a walk while you work or go to the other room where he’ll wait patiently.  He hates any flying bugs and will hunt down the fly or mosquito that has made it into your home. He’s not a fan of the sounds from aerosol cans.

Works in progress:

Recall – not ready to be off leash in an open area – especially where he’d see a running friend (deer, bird, squirrel, rabbit), and be off for the chase.

Diet & Exercise!  He is a sturdy, muscular boy – but does need to lose 10-15 more lbs.

He can be mouthy when he’s excited to see you or playing – never bites down – more like “gumming” your hand or arm in excitement of play.

Barking at the TV – he sometimes reacts to certain noises (some we can’t figure out and others like horse hoofs, barks, or screaming…).  He will run at the TV and bark but will quickly back off when told.  He sometimes sits and watches the TV which is entertaining.”

Want to learn more?  Please fill out an application and we’ll get in touch with you.  His foster home is in Coppell (N. Texas).

Watson is a very large Black Tri male. He is 1-2 years old with perfect white teeth and weighs approx. 80 lbs. (diet coming!!) He has been groomed, is already neutered and vaccinated. Foster home describes him as a BIG puppy. He will be evaluated by his foster home in China Springs and should be available for adoption around mid-May.
