Tex, STAR #1949

Tex is a stunning blue merle male who is almost 2.5 years old and weighs 50 lbs. Here’s the bio from his foster home:

“Tex is a sweetheart, who loves his family, and wants to be with them. He will bond with his owner and follow them around like a shadow. He’s fine with men, women, and children, and has been around younger children. Since Tex likes to give occasional hugs, he may be better suited to a home with older children, so he doesn’t knock a younger one down. Sometimes Tex will bark at a person on first meeting but then settles down. He rides well in the car.

Tex has blended well with our pack and especially likes to run and play with our female Aussie-mix. Since he has a lot of energy, a home with another playmate could be beneficial, but is not required. Our smaller miniature Aussie and Tex pretty much ignore each other. He has not been tested with cats.

Tex knows sit, inside, outside, (usually) drop it, crate, and we’ve been working on down and sit-wait-OK before going out a door. Since he has shown some separation anxiety, we crate him when we leave the house, giving him a frozen peanut butter and yogurt-filled Kong.

Tex has an abundance of energy, so a couple of walks a day aren’t enough for him. He enjoys running in the yard and would be happiest in a home with a fenced yard where he can run. Tex loves to chase a Chuckit ball and will usually bring it back and drop it. The key for Tex is giving him exercise throughout the day, whether running in the back yard or chasing a ball or frisbee, or other activities. Inside then, he just wants to be with his people, interact with them, relax, and show his sweetheart side.

On walks, as Tex can initially be a strong puller, we use a Halti No Pull Harness, which helps greatly. He can be motion reactive to bikes, deer, cats, and sometimes other dogs, but will keep moving with guidance (although sometimes reluctantly).

If an unleashed Tex goes out a house or car door into an unfenced area, he may take off for a run. While his name recall around the house is good, his name recall in an unfenced area is poor, so his adopter will need either a GPS collar or an Apple Air Tag affixed to his collar before taking him home. Name recall would be a recommended skill to work on with Tex.”

Tex is a stunning blue merle male, around 2.5 years old and weighs just under 50lbs.  He was adopted, but returned at no fault of his own due to the owner’s business travel schedule and he wanted a better home for Tex. We will reevaluate this good boy and he will be fostered in a home in Austin.  He may be available for adoption in early June.

This very alert boy has had quite the adventure. Found in the street in San Antonio, he moved to foster care in Georgetown. And he has a chip that was initially missed at Petsmart; however, his owner is unable to keep him so he will remain with STAR and be vetted and evaluated. Tex is close to two years old, 47 lbs. and is a blue merle male. Depending on his heartworm test, he should be available near the end of November.
