Reddington, STAR #2063

Reddington is a higher energy 2 1/2-year-old red tri male Aussie, who enjoys loving and attention, and returns it many times. He is a happy, Velcro boy who follows his person around, and interacts well with other family members.  He’s a little smaller at 42lbs and is smart, easy to train, and trusting.

Outside, he loves chasing a ball, which he’ll return to you, and if he doesn’t drop it, he quickly responds to “drop it”. Inside, he can bring a toy to you for inside play.  Since he can destuff a stuffed toy, alternatives like ropes, tennis balls, and Nylabones are good choices. He plays well with our Aussie mix, both inside and outside. Our smaller mini-Aussie and Reddington ignore each other. He has not been tested with cats.

He gets along well with men, women, and dog-savvy children, but can be barky with some people when meeting for the first time. He also “alert barks” (doorbell rings, odd sound outside, etc.).  Reddington walks best with a Halti harness (goes under his front legs) and needs continued leash training. He’s reactive to nearby running deer, and some people/dogs while out for a walk. Reddington was fine at the dog park, showing good name recall and interaction with other dogs.  He rides well in the car.

On walks he loves to smell things, and inside he’s right there sniffing when the refrigerator door opens, if food ls left close to the counters edge, or at mealtime.  He might be a candidate for nose work and scent detection classes and even competitions.  There’s a dog training center in Austin that has several programs for scent work, AKC has a virtual scent work test that can be done at home, and there may be other training resources in your area.

Reddington might do best in a home with another dog friend or could be an only dog.  While he can be relaxed inside, as a smart, higher energy Aussie, he needs to be challenged and exercised every day.

While Reddington has good name recall, and doesn’t show signs of being a flight risk, we still recommend, as a best practice, the use of an Apple Air Tag (or similar) on his collar, minimally for the first couple of months, while he bonds with his new family.

Reddington is crate trained, house trained, neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations and monthly heartworm prevention.  If you are interested in learning more about him and potentially adopt, the first step is to fill out an adoption application at the link below. His foster home is in Georgetown.

Introduction to the Adoption Process – South Texas Aussie Rescue

IMPORTANT: We do not deliver dogs to adopters – you must meet the dog in their foster home. A home visit at your home by one of our STAR volunteers is a required part of our adoption program. Adoptions outside of Texas are rare because of these requirements. You must have a secure fence in place, and we are not fans of apartments for this breed, nor homes where the dogs will be home alone 8+ hours daily. All STAR dogs are adopted to be inside pets with family members only, and all current or past pets in the home must have proof of being kept up to date on vaccinations and Heartworm prevention. The adoption fee is $300 and we spend that or much more on dogs to get them vetted – all STAR dogs will be neutered/spayed, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, heartworm negative, and on monthly heartworm prevention. If you already have an application on file with us, contact us to let us know you are interested in this dog.

Reddington is a Red Tri Male, around 2.5 years old and 45lbs. He was released to STAR for when the owners did not have time for him and so he started to dig. He’s loving and playful – and needs a home where they have time to give him the exercise and attention Aussies need. He is being fostered in Austin and may be available late January.
